Looking for distance? Less is more.
Most of my students come to me searching for one if not two things, consistency and distance. While it is very tempting to want to swing for the fences, usually swinging within yourself tends to work better.
Consistency and power come from the ability to return to impact in a certain sequence. Through amazing technology we find that almost 100% of tour players start their downswing with a move with their lower body, then torso, then lead arm, then the club, simulating a cracking of a whip.
What I notice with many of my students is when they want to give it a little extra, that is enough to throw the sequence off. An easier way of describing this motion, would be to look at your favorite quarterback (Brett Favre) or pitcher (Francisco Liriano). Watch how the lower body starts the throwing motion, followed by the torso, and then the arm.
So, instead of trying to swing longer or harder, focus on the timing of your swing, by warming up and throwing a few balls, then try to carry that feeling into your golf swing.
